Many caterpillars change their colors as they finish up feeding and prepare to wander off their host plants in search of a place to pupate. Often this means that green caterpillars flush with reds, yellows, or browns to match the forest floor. The tiger swallowtail goes from bright green to brown over the course of about three hours.
