Although this may look like a shark, the endangered smalltooth sawfish (Pristis pectinata) is actually a ray. This sawfish was identified by myself and a group of colleagues in Flamingo, FL. Unfortunately, this individual‘s behavior is consistent with neurotoxicity from exposure to harmful algal blooms (HABs) like red tide (Karenia brevis). HABs can spread rapidly in warm, nutrient rich water. Pollution and global warming must be controlled before we lose this species and many like it. #wildlife
